DVLA Authentication.
So far as I am concerned an original registration number on a vintage car is like the signature on an oil painting and just as valuable. Unfortunately the financial value is craved by less honest people and as a result DVLA require that any application has to be submitted through an approved club representative.
To regain an original registration number, DVLA require adequate independent proof that the car was issued with that number. This can take the form of the original or continuation logbook, or tax disc, or MOT certificate. In certain circumstances other proofs may also be acceptable.
The procedure can be as easy as you wish to make it. Application has to be made via the V765 scheme and the appropriate forms (i.e. V765 and V 5/55) should first of all be obtained from your local DVLA Office, before you are ready to put the car on the road. You will of course have to make a SORN declaration each year, but it will be worth it to ensure that you are not disappointed when you’ve finished an expensive rebuild. This particularly applies when you intend to rebuild a car as a sports car and replace a worn out body on an original chassis.
I will require these forms together with a rubbing of the chassis number and a clear ¾ front photograph of the car to proceed. At some stage the car will be inspected, if not by me, by someone else on my behalf.
Where no documentary proof is available, I can issue you with an “Authentication Certificate” which will enable you to obtain an age-related number from DVLA. But remember, you cannot obtain an age related number on anything other than an original running chassis. Hybrids with Ford axles are Not Accepted!
I do not charge a fee for the service, but give my time as part of my contribution to the club. I do however require members to make a donation of £15 to the club, payable to “The PreWar Austin Seven Club Ltd”, and none members to donate £15 plus the current years membership fee, to the club for which they will also receive club membership for the year in return. All I ask is for a book of stamps to cover my postage costs, but please remember I cannot therefore undertake to telephone you back.
